Fresh and friendly earns top spot

Continuing the trend of Palmerston North hospitality business’s coming out on top, Pita Pit on Cuba Street has been judged joint winner of the 2012 Franchise of the Year, seeing off 25 other Pita Pit outlets in New Zealand for the top spot.

Since they’ve been open, Pita Pit has taken what was once reckoned to be a dud retail spot and turned it into a food destination, a place people go out of their way to visit for fresh and healthy meals. The intersection upgrade has only made it easier for customers to pop in.

Popularity alone isn’t enough to win you an award, of course. You have to be the best for service, hygiene and general operations; these things are assessed by Pita Pit officials who pay quarterly visits to each franchise.

Owner Jude Fieldhouse says that having them arrive with their clipboards is far from intimidating.

“To me, it’s not pressure. I enjoy them coming down – it confirms I’m doing a good job. They’ve got to the point where they don’t have to come down as often, since they couldn’t find anything wrong.”

Customer feedback is a factor as well, and the Pita Pit staff make a point of getting to know the people who come through the door. They know regulars by name, and aim for personalised service. The changes over the road have given everyone plenty to talk about, especially the red rod sculptures.

“Love them or hate them, everyone has an opinion,” says Jude. “It’s a great opportunity to chat and get to know people.”

For food that’s fresh, healthy, and a welcome alternative to the sandwiches with which you’re familiar, served to you by friendly staff, visit Pita Pit on the corner of Cuba and Taonui Street – and from February, you can drop into their new shop opening in Terrace End.
